Hannah's Broken!

{Wednesday} February 9, 2011
My friend Holly & I help each other with taking the kids to and from school. Most days she takes, and most days I pick up. This day Holly picked them up from school and noticed that Hannah was limping, and when she asked her about it Hannah started to cry and couldn't stop. When they got home Holly brought in her back pack and let me know that she got hurt at lunch recess. I figured she would be okay since she cries easily when she gets hurt . . . I really didn't think much of it. I had her lay on the couch and elevate it and Holly & I chatted for a few minutes. When she left I went and sat by Hannah, and went to take off her shoe to look at her foot and saw this . . .
Now, my lifetime of gymnastics awarded me with more broken ankles than I can count. I really have no idea how many times I was in a cast, and almost always my broken ankles looked exactly like that. I was pretty sure she at least came close to breaking it so I asked Holly's husband, Kelly {our personal podiatrist . . . kiddddding, but it IS nice to have a dr. living just a few doors down} to come look at it. He said she should definitely get it x-rayed, so once Wade got home she & I {and our cute little nursing Porter} drove to San Marcos to get it checked out.

Sure enough . . . broken. Not horribly but near her growth plate so a cast was a must. Booo!

After hobbling around school on crutches for a day {since she could bear ZERO weight on her splinted foot} I was able to get her in to get her cast put on. I was SO thankful that they could see her before the next week because she really struggled with the crutches. She quickly found out they are NOT as fun as they look! haha

All casted up and ready to WALK! We headed home, had lunch, painted her silly looking nails and took her to school just in time to decorate her Valentines mail box. Phew! It took her a few minutes to feel comfortable walking but by the time she got to school she was doing okay.

After about two weeks of having her cute little blue cast, it turned not so cute and rather stinky . . . not to mention the toe area was falling apart. So I took her back to the dr. where they took off the nasty cast . . .

. . . got washed up and got a brand new, pretty pink one. Hooray for clean casts!!

FINALLY!! Four & 1/2 weeks later she was able to get it removed for good. We were SO happy to be done with the annoying thing. I'm so grateful that she didn't have to get another one and that she was able to get her foot back . . . not to mention that she'd be able to wear her regular pants again! Woo hoo!!

The guy who removed her cast asked her if she wanted to save it and she gave him this face and said, "Um, gross?"
